Doctor Who stars Matt Smith and Karen Gillan headed to New York to film scenes for the latest series of the popular show.

The actors were snapped during a film shoot in Central Park, where they were mobbed by fans.

Matt, 29, and Karen, 24, were joined by co-star Arthur Darvill for the shoot, which also took in the spectacular backdrop of Brooklyn Bridge.

Who, where, when, why? Matt and Karen shoot scenes for the new series next to Brooklyn Bridge

Bridging the gap: The actors also headed to Central Park to film the popular sci-fi series

At one point Matt and Karen, who plays his assistant Amy Pond, playfully got their phones out and filmed one another.

While they also filmed fans who’d gathered around the very public location that had been chosen for their shoot.

Fans have also posted videos of the shoot to YouTube, which have helped fuel the rumour mill as to what will happen in the new series.

Who nose what will happen next? Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill) share a tender moment as the Doctor (Matt Smith) looks on

It’s already been reported that this series will see the demise of Amy Pond, and that it may happen during the New York shoot.

The show returns to our screens this autumn and is set to be one of the most explosive series yet.

Karen Gillan’s final appearance will take place in season seven episode five and fans have been speculating over videos of the New York posted to YouTube.

In one scene the Doctor appears to be reading a note, as he sits down on a bench in Central Park he appears overcome with emotion.

Could the note contain news of Amy’s death?

The end? Fans have been speculating as to whether the New York scenes will be Amy’s last

The cast and crew also filmed scenes on the beach next to the Hudson River, with Brooklyn Bridge as a spectacular backdrop.

And they later acted out scene in the Tudor City apartment complex found on the East Side of Manhattan.

Though the storyline for Amy’s departure has been kept under wraps, Matt promised that it will be «incredible».

Head writer on the show Stephen Moffat said: ‘Not everyone gets out alive, and I mean it this time!’

Former Emmerdale star Jenna-Louise Coleman has been lined up as the new Doctor Who companion.

In a recent interview with Doctor Who Magazine, she said: ‘I know what my introduction is and I have a general idea of where we’re going to go. There’s definitely a story arc.

Spectacular: The couple are seen in front of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York

‘It sounds really interesting, really exciting. I don’t think anything’s been done like it before, but there are lots of secrets and intrigue, and I think it’s going to throw and confuse a lot of people, and surprise a lot of people.’

The cast recently completed filming on a Wild West themed episode in Spain.

At the end of the last series viewers saw River Song reveal herself to daughter Amy and it seems she will return for her exit, which will also feature the Weeping Angels.

A casting call that went out in New York just a few weeks ago requested a photo double of River Song actress Alex Kingston, adding they must be able to drive.

What’s the outcome? Fans will be eager to find out exactly what happens in the new series

Stunning: The amazing location could well be the place where Amy meets her demise
